Derek Black – President
Derek Black has achieved personal fitness levels that many only dream about. From an early age it was evident that Derek’s drive and motivation was at a higher level than his peers and this was quickly solidified when he was selected as one the top high school athletes in the western United States by the age of 15. During his senior years, Derek was an All-American on both offence and defence, a feat rarely completed by any athlete. Derek capped off his high school career by starting on both sides of the ball in the Riverside County All Star Game.
Derek’s continued dedication to strength and fitness resulted in a full ride scholarship to Gavilan College in Gilroy, California where as a freshman he was expected to lead the nation’s top ranked defence as a strong safety. The coaches were so impressed by Derek’s physical abilities that they immediately converted him to a running back where he blossomed into a starter. Within three months, Derek led his team to a Bowl victory, scoring the only two touch downs of the game.
At Gavilan, Derek suffered a serious knee injury that most coaches and athletes would consider career ending. The knee required surgery sidelining Derek for almost a year but through dedication, discipline, and desire, Derek was back on the football field at Mt. San Jacinto College where again he was the starting full back, the team captain, the team’s leading rusher, the team MVP and a California 1st Team All State Athlete as a rusher. After an injury that would have left most on the sidelines permanently, Derek returned in less than one year to capture Mt. San Jacinto single season rushing record while leading the league in rushing and being selected to the All American Team.
Derek continued his successful athletic career at the University of Las Vegas Nevada where he was a two year starter at the running back and full back positions. Derek also started on three different special teams and was named Special Teams Player of the Year for the Running Rebels in his senior year as he scored the most offensive knock downs for his squad. Derek completed his career at UNLV as a team captain and left behind the team record for heaviest squat by a player.
Upon completion of his college career, Derek was drafted to by the New Mexico Rattlesnakes of the Professional Spring Football League. Derek then went to the National Football League as a free agent where he was signed by the Los Angeles Raiders and then the Dallas Cowboys. After two years of perusing a career in the NFL, Derek completed his professional football career with the Utah Catzz of the Arena Football League. Derek’s desire to be a well rounded individual also resulted in two university degrees with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice and a Minor in Stress Management and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Psychology from the University of Las Vegas Nevada. Derek also holds certification in Performance Enhancement Specialist from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Having had success at all stages of his athletic career, Derek has shifted his focus to his clients at DBlack Fitness.
